Working
in Singapore
Some people say that eating is the national pastime of Singaporeans,
and it just might be true. Visitors new to the country would probably
shake their heads in disbelief at the number of eating establishments,
and the list keeps growing. The variety and quality of food would leave
even the most fussy of diners quite content. As well as local cuisine,
the choice of international cuisines available is unsurpassable.
Local Cuisine
- Chinese: Chinese food in Singapore has its
roots in the different provinces of China. Some delicacies not to be
missed include Peking duck, Shanghai eel, dim sum (Cantonese), Hainanese
chicken rice and Teochew braised duck.
- Indian: Indian food can be (generally) categorised
into South Indian cuisine (hot curries, rice-flour breads, vegetarian
delights and of course, fish-head curry) while North Indian food features
wheat rather than rice and more meat dishes. The famous tandoori dishes
is a must where meat is cooked in a clay urn over charcoals.
- Malay / Indonesian: Spices are used liberally
in every Malay dish, the most important being 'belacan' (prawn paste).
A favourite in Singapore is satay, barbecued meat on a skewer, eaten
with spicy peanut sauce.
- Nyonya: Nyonya food is a combination of
Chinese and Malay, which came about in the 15th Century when early Chinese
settlers married local Malay women. The main ingredients are mainly
Chinese and the food is cooked with a variety of local spices.
- Seafood: Don't leave Singapore without sampling
its delicious seafood. Some specials not to be missed includes the famous
chili crab, Drunken Prawns, Crispy Fried Baby Squid and Buttered Prawns.
- Other Asian: Many restaurants in Singapore
specialises in other Asian cuisines like Japanese, Thai, Korean and
Vietnamese.
- Western: Singapore offers Western cuisines
from almost every corner of the world. Take your pick from Swiss, Italian,
French, Mexican, Spanish, American, Austrian and Middle Eastern.
- Hawker Food: Food courts, as they are also
known, gives you the chance to sample a whole variety of local food
at very reasonable prices.
