Climate:
The temperature is between 26°C and 32°C in the day. At night it may be a little cooler but very rarely drops below 22°C. Being in the tropics, one can expect abundant rainfall throughout the year but basically, the monsoon season lasts from November to January and the dry season between May and July. July to August is very hot. Humidity can rise to the 90% mark especially at night and at daybreak. Average rainfall is approximately 210 mm.

Geography:
Located about 2° north of the Equator, Singapore comprises Singapore Island and 58 other small islands around, the other main ones being Pulau Ubin, Pulau Tekong and Sentosa.

Vegetation:
Forests occupy 5% of the land, mainly the central area of the island. Farmland makes up 4%. 7% of the land is taken up by plantations.
The highest peak is Bukit Timah (162.5 m), in the central hills of Singapore.

History
When Raffles set foot in Singapore in 1819 and claimed it for the East India Company, it was already a thriving town and the population was growing. Raffles restructured the town and laid the foundations for Singapore as a major free port. She became part of the Straits Settlement together with Penang and Malacca, and was a stronghold of the British, until the Japanese invasion in 1942.

After the end of WWII, she became a British Crown Colony.
Singapore formed part of Malaya (or the Malayan Federation) but left to form a separate and independent republic in 1965.

Economy:
Singapore's economy has undergone tremendous growth over the last two decades. Trade, shipping, banking, tourism, oil-refining, shipbuilding and electronics are key components of the country's dynamic and booming economy.
